“THE
CHASE” - SUTTON FOREST, NSW SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS
“The Chase”, built over
125 years ago, originally formed part of the Newbury
Land Grant made to Australia’s first Harbour
Master, Captain John Nicholson.
“The Chase” is a much coveted Southern
Highlands’ Estate. It is within a most
private setting and offers one of the district’s
finest gardens.
A
property of great ambience and rare charm
Location
“The Chase”, together with the vast majority
of significant Southern Highland properties, is located
within the Moss Vale / Sutton Forest area. The
renowned “Whitley”, “Oldbury Farm”, “Cardrona” and “Rotherwood” properties
are in close proximity.
Moss Vale town centre is approximately four kilometres
to the north. Sydney CBD is 130 kilometres to
the north via the F5 Freeway and M5 Motorway.
The Land
The land occupies an area of 42 hectares (104 acres). It
is of regular shape and is level to gently undulating. Soils
are of volcanic origin and in the main of red basalt. Pasture
has been well improved and maintained over a good period
of time. Introduced grasses include clovers,
rye and phalaris. Whilst generally cleared, excellent
retained timber provides good shade and shelter.
The land is subdivided to five main
paddocks and numerous smaller paddocks. Fencing
is of timber post and rail and five strand barb.
The property is superbly watered
by dams, bore and spring. The garden benefits
from an irrigation system.
Town water, three phase power and
telephone services are connected. Gas is supplied
from a commercial storage tank.
“The
Chase” Homestead
The residence, built about 1880 and subsequently superbly
restored, is of immense charm.
It comprises reception hall, formal
sitting room, formal dining room, billiards room, central
living room, open plan kitchen/family room, study,
mud room and laundry.
The master bedroom suite offers a
full bathroom and separate dressing room. There
are four additional bedrooms and two additional bathrooms.
The rooms are of excellent proportion
and feature “eleven foot” high Wunderlich
ceilings.
The living room and family rooms
open to a central sandstone flagged courtyard.
A fine brick arched verandah is to
the north with additional verandahs to the east and
west.
The Garden
The garden is one of the great gardens of the New South
Wales’ Southern Highlands. It occupies
some seven acres of sweeping lawns, hedged and walled
gardens and exceptional exotic trees. The centerpiece
is an expansive spring fed ornamental lake. The
garden includes superb examples of Spruce, Weeping
Cherry, Beech, Maple and Poplar trees and an outstanding
display of Rhododendron, Azalea, Hydrangea and Roses. Only
time allows the creation of such a garden.
